CM Punk has clarified the intentions behind a viral moment from WWE’s holiday live event tour. He shut down speculation that it was a calculated response to online criticism.

During a match against Bronson Reed to close out 2025, the World Heavyweight Champion performed a spot where he removed his t-shirt. He then also revealed a second identical t-shirt underneath.

The moment circulated widely on social media, with many fans and pundits interpreting it as a direct jab at WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash. Nash had previously critiqued Punk’s appearance on the December 22 episode of “Raw.”

He made negative remarks about Punk wrestling in a t-shirt while holding the company’s top prize. Speaking on “Notsam Wrestling Live!,” Punk dismissed the idea that he was sending a message to Nash or anyone else. Instead, he explained that the stunt was simply an inside joke intended to amuse his opponent.

“Yeah, and it’s not that deep. That was to pop the guy I was wrestling. Doesn’t go any deeper than that but, you know, somebody’s always gotta throw their two cents in and, ‘No, no, no, what he was doing was –’ no, no, no. I made dude laugh, and that’s what house shows are for,” Punk said.

The “Second City Saint” emphasized that untelevised live events allow for more freedom and levity, describing himself as the “king of ribs” in that environment. He recalled a similar instance from the previous year at Madison Square Garden, where he made an entrance in a shower cap and towel just to entertain the boys and the crowd.

Punk expressed frustration with those who analyze every move for hidden meaning, suggesting that some observers prefer negativity over enjoyment.

“Some people really wanna be miserable though. I’m trying not to be. I’m really, really trying,” he laughed.

Punk has since kicked off his 2026 campaign on a high note. On the premiere episode of “Monday Night Raw” on Netflix, he successfully defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Bron Breakker, retaining his title despite a chaotic main event.
