The Charlotte Hornets have been here before. This time around, they are on the other side of a player dealing with concerns in a physical following a deadline deal.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Bulls sent the standout veteran guard Coby White in a package to the Hornets. On Friday, it was revealed that White has a left calf injury, which will cause him to miss time. As a result, there was an adjustment for the trade.

The initial package from the Hornets included Collin Sexton and Ousmane Dieng, and three future second-round picks, in order to land Coby White and Mike Conley. With the latest development, the Hornets will get one of those picks back to lessen the deal on Chicago’s end, according to The Athletic. The Hornets will keep the earliest pick, which takes place in 2029.

While Coby White’s delay is an unfortunate development, the Hornets have been playing just fine without any big additions. They might be out of the postseason picture for now, but Charlotte is on an eight-game winning streak. They hold a 24-28 record, placing 10th in the Eastern Conference.

The addition of White should be a solid boost for a young Charlotte team. The 25-year-old former first-rounder has been in the NBA since 2019. He started in a bench role with the Bulls, and eventually became a full-time starter over the past three seasons.

This year, White appeared in 29 games, seeing the court for 29.1 minutes. He posted averages of 18.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists. The veteran guard shot 43 percent from the field and knocked down 34 percent of his threes.

While the Bulls enjoyed White’s presence over the years, they knew he was looking for a notable payday in the offseason. As Chicago fires up a rebuild, shipping out White was just one of several deadline moves they’ve made.

It’s unclear when White will get a chance to make his debut for the Bulls, but the trade won’t have a drastic change like last year’s deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, which totally fell through after a reported failed physical on the Hornets’ end. White will get a chance to change teams for the first time in his career before hitting the free agency market this summer.
