In 2024, Colorado engineered one of the better turnarounds in college football, finishing the season with a 9-4 record.

Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders inherited a program that went 1-11 in 2022. In his first year with CU, he went 4-8.
However, in 2025, the team took a turn for the worse after losing stars Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders to the NFL. The Buffaloes went 3-9 overall and 1-8 in the Big 12.
Sanders is making changes before the 2026 campaign, hoping to instill discipline as the Buffaloes work to become bowl eligible again.

Per Barkley Truax of On3, Sanders installed a new fine system that will take away NIL money for disciplinary issues.
Players will be fined $2,500 for being a no-show to practice, $500 for being late to practice, $400 for being late to a meeting of film session, $2,000 for being a no-show to a meeting or film session, $1,000 for being late to a strength and conditioning session, $1,500 for being a no-show to strength and conditioning, $1,000 for being late to treatment, and $1,500 for being a no-show to treatment.
Buffaloes players are subject to a possible $2,500 fine for violating team rules and could be fined up to $5,000 for violating a public/social media misconduct rule.
Sanders told his team he wants them to become men this offseason.
“I’m supposed to have 100-something men, but not everyone’s a man right now,” Sanders said. “But through this process — and that’s what I love, the process. I’m really not in love with the results. I’m in love with the process. I like the struggle. I like the journey. … We’re in the process right now.
“But I need men. I don’t need boys. I don’t need blamers, or people that’s on a list. I don’t need naysayers. I don’t need people who sold this court amongst other men, who talk about program, who talk about this. And I’m not having it this year. Ain’t no way in the world, because we’re winning whether you like it or not.”
It’s unclear what Colorado and Sanders plan to do with the money received via fines. Per the NFL, league fines go to the Professional Athletes Foundation and the NFL Foundation.
Sanders is 43-27 during his three seasons with Colorado. The Buffaloes ended 2025 on a five-game losing streak.
The Buffaloes’ last win came against then-No. 22 Iowa State in a 24-17 contest at Folsom Field on Oct. 11.
