Have the Philadelphia Phillies already blown their best shot at keeping Kyle Schwarber beyond this season?

That’s the general summary of the argument insider Robert Murray of FanSided made on Monday, when suggesting that the slugger could ditch Philadelphia for one of his former clubs.

Murray wrote that Schwarber’s “juiciest fit” this winter was with the Boston Red Sox, who traded for two months of his services in 2021, and provided the reasoning behind why it could happen.

“The Phillies should have extended Schwarber before the season,” Murray wrote. “The interest was certainly mutual. Instead, Schwarber was not extended and will be a free agent after the season – and considering his production this year, with 49 home runs and 120 RBI, he’s going to cash in and have many suitors involved in his market.

“Which will only make it tougher for the Phillies to re-sign Schwarber. There’s a shot he returns, for sure. But the team that makes a ton of sense for Schwarber is the Boston Red Sox.”

Ironically, Murray also presented it as a mistake that the Red Sox ever let Schwarber go, so if this scenario were to play out, one team’s gaffe would concur with another team righting its wrongs.

“Schwarber, of course, was previously with Boston. He thrived at Fenway Park. His teammates loved him. He was, in every sense, the perfect acquisition for the Red Sox,” wrote Murray.

“Not re-signing him when he was a free agent was a mistake, and they have a chance to right that wrong now. They have the money saved after trading Rafael Devers and signing Roman Anthony early. It makes too much sense for both Schwarber and the Red Sox.”

It’s easy to envision the Red Sox wanting to add Schwarber and his National League-leading 49 home runs to their lineup. One would have to figure, though, that their offer would have to come in higher than the Phillies’ to make that happen.

It’s certainly a possibility. But Phillies fans would be positively irate if their team let Schwarber slip through the cracks.
