After finishing last season with the third-worst defense in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys have made some major changes this offseason.
They drafted Ohio State safety Caleb Downs (Round 1), UCF edge-rusher Malachi Lawrence (Round 1), Michigan edge-rusher Jaishawn Barham (Round 3), Florida cornerback Devin Moore (Round 4), and Alabama edge-rusher LT Overton (Round 4) in the draft last week.
They also traded for Pro Bowl edge-rusher Rashawn Gary and 100-tackle linebacker Dee Winters, plus signed former Los Angeles Rams cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Derion Kendrick, former Arizona Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson, and ex-Denver Broncos safety P.J. Locke in free agency.
But Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports believes there’s one more move Dallas can make that would put the team over the top: adding star edge-rusher Joey Bosa. Pereles named Bosa the best free-agent fit for what Dallas currently needs.
“The Cowboys want to win right now, and Bosa could help,” Pereles wrote. “Currently, Dallas is depending on Rashan Gary, who really struggled last year, rookie Malachi Lawrence and second-year player Donovan Ezeiruaku, who had just two sacks as a rookie, as their primary pass-rushers. Bosa had five sacks, five forced fumbles and nine TFL last year in Buffalo.”
Bosa will be 31 by the time the season starts, and his best football is clearly behind him.
But the good thing about Dallas’ set up is he won’t be relied on to carry the pass-rush and fill Micah Parsons’ shoes.
With Gary taking over as the heavy-hitter on the edge, Bosa can alternate with Lawrence, Ezeiruaku, James Houston, who had 5.5 sacks last season, and fourth-round rookie LT Overton in a pass-rushing rotation that will keep everyone fresh and give opposing offenses multiple looks to worry about.
