Reinforcements are coming for the Chicago Cubs.

In a post via their X account, the Cubs announced several roster moves prior to the beginning of a three-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Chicago reinstated the duo of starting pitcher Javier Assad and catcher Miguel Amaya from the 60-day injured list.

Two roster spots were needed for those moves, so relief pitcher Nate Pearson was optioned to Triple-A Iowa and utilityman Jon Berti was designated for assignment.

Assad has not pitched in the majors at all this season after suffering an oblique strain in the early parts of spring training. Amaya began the season as the Cubs’ starting catcher and was performing well before going down with an oblique injury of his own.

Pearson was a viable option to be sent down, as he has a 9.20 ERA and just seven strikeouts in 11 appearances for the Cubs this season.

Berti was expected to be designated for assignment at some point during the season, as his stint in Chicago has not gone as the club had hoped.

He has just 14 at-bats since July, and his .200 average did not have much of a place on the roster.

His last moment in a Cubs uniform will be a caught stealing in the top of the ninth inning Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

According to Marquee Sports Network’s Taylor McGregor, not only has Assad been reinstated, but he is expected to start on the mound Tuesday night.

Assad and Amaya were battery mates several times last season so it would not be surprising to see Amaya in the starting lineup as well.
