Newark city authorities have imposed a curfew around Delaney Hall, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in New Jersey, after competing protests and days of clashes around the facility.

A “mandatory curfew” is in place in the half-mile area surrounding Delaney Hall, lasting between 9 a.m. and 6 a.m., said Newark city mayor, Ras Baraka.

Baraka said the measure was needed because of the “escalating situation” and multiple people had already been arrested around the site, including several in possession of weapons.

New Jersey’s state police had carved out protest zones and checkpoints around Delaney Hall on Friday, taking over from immigration enforcement agents up against demonstrators at the site.

“It has grown unsafe, and that’s completely unacceptable,” Mikie Sherrill, the Democratic governor of New Jersey, told reporters, saying the deployment of police would “lower the temperature” at Delaney Hall.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
