Cats are known for ignoring people, including their owners, but a TikTok user recently went viral after she got a stranger’s cat to wave back at her from behind a window and got video proof of their interaction.

The viral video, shared Sunday on TikTok under the username @j2cccc, shows the tuxedo cat sitting behind his owner’s window on the ground floor of their home, looking outside while people and cars pass by.

As the poster waves to the cat, the unimaginable happens: The cat unexpectedly waves back at her, leaving her confused as to what just happened. Thankfully, she filmed their interaction on camera; otherwise, nobody would have believed her.

“How many aura points did I gain when I waved to a cat and it waved back,” says layover text in the clip.

Cats may lack the cognitive ability to understand our language, but they know when you’re talking to them, according to pet wellness experts at Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Or, as they put it, cats “comprehend human language in the same way that we understand meowing.”

But while cats don’t speak our language, they do recognize it and respond through orienting behavior, such as ear and head movement.

“Regularly interacting with your cat using positive vocalization and gestures, such as smiling and speaking in an upbeat tone of voice, will reinforce the bond between the two of you,” the Hill’s website added.

The video quickly went viral and has so far received over 8.3 million views and 2.9 million likes on TikTok.

One user, Caity, commented: “I think it wasn’t waving and… that cat might possibly be German.”

Coffee – The pigeon lord said wrote: “+10000000 aura with butterflies and flower petals floating all around.”

Nikon Europe wrote: “You’ve been chosen.”

User lang added: “So you’re the chosen one huh? I’m really envious of you. it should be me.”

Another user, Lizzy, commented: “The way that if this happened to me I’d be talking about it for months.”

Emma Malory said: “This is like watching a fan get noticed by a singer on stage.”

Lumina VIP added: “That’s not a cat that’s a damn shapeshifter right there hun.”

Newsweek reached out to j2cccc for comment via TikTok comments and could not verify the details of the case.
