Dodgers Place Freddie Freeman on Injured List

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman on the injured list in a somewhat surprising move.

Freeman re-injured his ankle injury that required offseason surgery on Sunday, but based on recent comments from both the first baseman and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, it appeared he was nearing a return to action.

However, he will now be out at least another week. The Dodgers didn’t announce who would be replacing him on the active roster. The move was retroactive to March 31.

Freeman’s ankle injury dates back to last September, when he suffered a severe ankle sprain that normally would have required a four-to-six-week stint on the injured list.

However, Freeman had just a week off before Game 1 of the National League Division Series.

While Freeman was in and out of the lineup during the NLDS and NL Championship Series, he returned for the World Series, where he hit four home runs, drove in 12 RBIs, hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history, and took home World Series MVP honors.

This offseason, Freeman underwent surgery to repair the ankle. While he wasn’t going to be 100 percent heading into the new year, he felt good enough to play.

Unfortunately, Freeman slipped entering the shower on Sunday, re-aggravating the injury. He recently opened up about the unfortunate mishap.

“Halfway through my (Sunday) morning coffee, I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll just shower to get ready for the day,'” Freeman said. “And next thing you know, I’m down in the bathtub. It’s a great mental picture, if you guys want to think about it, big guy falling all over the place. … Freak accident, you can’t really make it up, crazy.

“But it was just one of those things. You slip in bathtub showers all the time. And when you’re healthy, you just catch yourself. And when you’re not, when you’ve got a little surgically repaired ankle, mostly I think it just flared everything kind of back up. I was a little sore. Sore on the inside still. But I’m feeling much better.”

While Freeman said he was feeling much better by Tuesday, the Dodgers held him out of the lineup for all three games against the Atlanta Braves this week. The plan was for him to return for Friday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, but that won’t be the case any longer.

Roberts should provide an update on Freeman’s status ahead of Friday’s series opener.
