Donald Trump is suing the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department for $10 billion, alleging that the agency failed to protect his tax returns from being leaked during his first term.

In 2019 and 2020, former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn shared Trump’s tax returns with media outlets including The New York Times and ProPublica.

Trump, along with his two eldest sons and his family business The Trump Organization, are now arguing that the IRS and the Treasury Department fell short of their “duty to safeguard” the confidential returns.

They filed the lawsuit in a federal court in Florida, arguing that the IRS and the Treasury were “obligated to have appropriate technical, employee screening, security, and monitoring systems to prevent Littlejohn’s unlawful conduct,” but that they “failed to take such mandatory precautions.”

This is a developing story. More to follow.
