One of the most shocking moments in Nebraska’s 77–71 NCAA Tournament loss to Iowa came in the final minute as both teams battled for an Elite Eight spot.
Down by just three points with under a minute remaining, Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg inexplicably sent only four players onto the court out of a timeout. This left an Iowa player wide open, who converted a layup and drew a foul, extending the lead to six and effectively ending the game.
“Wait a minute, I think Nebraska only had four defenders on the floor,” Stan Van Gundy said. “They did… That is a major breakdown. They didn’t even have five guys on the floor when Iowa was inbounding. You can’t match up like that.”

This started an uproar on social media of upset fans calling for the job of Hoiberg after likely the most costly error of his entire coaching career.
“I hate Fred Hoiberg for many reasons. But after tonight I will never forgive him,” a fan harshly said.
Someone else added, “Fred Hoiberg is a heck of a coach, doing a great job in Nebraska… But this might be a firable offense.”
Another person wrote, “Fire Fred Hoiberg.”
“Fred Hoiberg absolutely lost that game for Nebraska. What a joke of a coach,” a fan shared.
One more commented, “Fire Fred Hoiberg asap send Nebraska home.”
Will Hoiberg actually be fired? Probably not. But to suggest there’s an excuse for that blunder in the biggest game in program history would be false.
The Cornhuskers went cold from beyond the arc down the stretch, yet it remained a one-possession game with plenty of time to get a stop and a tying score. Ultimately, though, that mistake was the final blow.
