When the Kansas City Chiefs drafted defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah in the first round of the 2023 NFL draft, they had high expectations for him.

A first-team All-American, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year, and two-time first-team All-Big 12 selection, many expected Anudike-Uzomah to step in and dominate in the NFL.

But three years into his career, things haven’t gone according to plan. And on Friday, Anudike-Uzomah got some bad news when the Chiefs informed him they weren’t picking up his fifth-year option, which would have paid him $14.5 million in 2027.

What It Means

Anudike-Uzomah missed all of 2025 after being placed on season-ending injured reserve with a hamstring injury.

He’s had two lackluster years, recording 14 tackles, 0.5 sacks, and a forced fumble as a rookie, and he followed it up with 27 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery in Year 2.

But after the Chiefs drafted Oklahoma edge-rusher R Mason Thomas (80 pressures, 48 hurries, 25.5 tackles for loss, 17 sacks, 15 QB hits, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries) in Round 2 of the 2026 NFL draft and signing Toledo defensive end Anthony Dunn Jr. (83 pressures, 53 hurries, 14 sacks, 12 QB hits, 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles) as an undrafted free agent, Anudike-Uzomah may be the odd man out.

George Karlaftis has one edge-rusher spot locked down, but the other spot is up for grabs. Second-year DE Ashton Gillotte should have the inside edge as the most productive returning player from last year’s team, and Anudike-Uzomah will have to beat him out while holding off Thomas and Quinn Jr.

But it’s not all bad for Anudike-Uzomah. Knowing that he could potentially hit the free-agent market next offseason, the 24-year-old DE could be incentivized to show out in 2026.
