Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been a lightning rod for criticism over the past couple of years, and former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr understands exactly what he is going through.

In spite of the fact that Carr was a fierce rival of Herbert’s during his playing days, he has offered a surprising defense of the Chargers star, even cracking a joke at his own expense.

“I know a thing or two about zero playoff wins,” Carr said.

Not that Carr got much of an opportunity to play in the postseason. Throughout his 11-year NFL career that spanned between 2014 and 2024, Carr played in just one playoff game, which came in January 2022 when the Raiders lost to the Cincinnati Bengals in the Wild Card Round.

Sadly, Carr’s best NFL season came in 2016 when he finished third in MVP voting and led the Raiders — who were then playing in Oakland — to a 12-4 record. However, he suffered a broken fibula in Week 16, so he didn’t even get the chance to play in the playoffs that year.

The 34-year-old signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2023 and spent just two mostly unsuccessful campaigns with the club before announcing his retirement after 2024, a season in which Carr sustained a shoulder injury that would ultimately result in surgery.

Meanwhile, Herbert has made two playoff appearances thus far in Los Angeles, going 0-2. Most recently, he threw four interceptions in a Wild Card Round defeat at the hands of the Houston Texans last January. By contrast, he tossed just three picks throughout the entire 2024 regular season.

In spite of Herbert’s skimpy — or really non-existent — postseason resume, he remains one of the game’s most talented signal-callers, and it may only be a matter of time before the 27-year-old finally breaks through.

Herbert and the Chargers opened up their 2025 campaign against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night.
