A small plane crashed in central Illinois over the weekend, killing four people, officials said — the latest in a recent spate of air tragedies across the US.

The four occupants of the single-engine Cessna 180 took off from Menomonie, Wisc., on Saturday morning and died when the plane went down about 10:15 a.m. near County Road 1400 in Trilla, the Illinois State Police confirmed.

The crash occurred just hours after another small plane crashed into Nebraska’s Platte River, killing all three of its occupants.

Kynnedi Goldstein, a witness to the Illinois tragedy, said she was in her house when the crash rocked the neighborhood and took the power out.

“All of a sudden I hear, like, this noise, like the whole boom. And then our power went out for a second,” she told CBS Chicago.

“So then I go out to our sunroom, and I look, and there’s a huge pile of smoke,” she said.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said his administration is providing assistance to the National Transportation Safety Board as the agency investigates the incident.

“My administration is monitoring the situation as we keep those impacted by the plane crash in our thoughts today,” Pritzker wrote on X. “Thank you to the first responders who rushed to the scene.”

Officials have yet to identify the four people who died in the plane crash.

As of Sunday afternoon, the wrecked plane remained on the road, with the streets shut down and NTSB agents expected to arrive Monday, local WGN TV reported.

Last week, a small but powerful plane also crashed in upstate New York, killing a family of doctors and high-achieving student athletes.

That crash came just two days after a small plane went down near the Boca Raton Airport in Florida, killing three people.
