“He’s just helping out, you know, it just would have been a natural instinct. I would have done the same thing. I’ve got an 88-year-old mother,” Diquattro said.

Diquattro said Salvatore and his wife migrated to Australia from Italy in their youth and had been living in the Albion area for many years.

CCTV footage obtained by this masthead shows a man running out of the two-storey brick home about 8.10pm before a second person comes out running behind him.

In another video, a man can be heard moaning before a police officer comes out of a car and starts walking down the driveway.

“Oi, let him go,” a woman can be heard yelling. “Stop it, police is here.”

The woman then repeats “let him go” before a man shouts back: “Let him go? He’s a f—ing animal”.

Neighbour Jaimee Dash, who has lived across the road from the family for several years, said she was at home with her brother when they heard screaming outside.

Shortly after, emergency services arrived at the scene.

“I hope the old man and his son are OK,” Dash said. “I’m not sure what’s happened to them. I do hope they are all right.”

Joe remained at hospital in a serious condition on Monday afternoon, while Salvatore was also receiving medical treatment for minor injuries.

The alleged offender, who is yet to be identified by police, was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“Investigations into the matter remain ongoing,” police said.
