Apple TV has unofficially become the Bill Lawrence Cinematic Universe.

Lawrence created and served as executive producer/showrunner of Ted Lasso, which solidified Apple TV as a streaming television giant. Ted Lasso has won 13 Primetime Emmys since premiering in 2020, and its cast has appeared in Lawrence’s subsequent shows.

Apple TV’s Emmy-winning smash series Shrinking, which followed Ted Lasso, was co-created by Lawrence, Jason Segel, and Brett Goldstein, who stars as Roy Kent on Ted Lasso.

Lawrence hopped over to HBO for his latest project, but he brought Phil Dunster with him. Dunster stars as Jamie Tartt on, yes, Ted Lasso. But Steve Carell is the leading man of Rooster, which hit HBO and HBO Max on March 8.

The Rooster racked up 2.4 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S. during its first three days of availability, making it the most-watched HBO comedy debut since June 2015, per Deadline.

The first season of Rooster will stream every Sunday until May 10, but fans are already wondering if it’s been renewed for Season 2.

A decision on Rooster has not yet been made, which is not unusual for a new series, but Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva reported a promising update on March 18.

“HBO’s freshman comedy series Rooster and HBO Max’s drama pilot How To Survive Without Me already had momentum for a Season 2 renewal and a series order, respectively,” Andreeva wrote. “The pickup chances for both Warner Bros. Television-produced shows have now further improved as they have been awarded tax credits from the California Tax Commission.”

Rooster was co-created by Lawrence and Matt Tarses. Carell’s Greg Russo visits his daughter, Katie (Charly Clive), who just had her world blown up after her husband, Archie (Dunster), left her for a grad student. Greg is a best-selling author, and to help preserve Katie’s job security, he agrees to become the writer-in-residence at Ludlow College.

The show’s cast boasts Danielle Deadwyler, Lauren Tsai, and John C. McGinley. Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) and Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) also appear.

This Sunday’s episode, entitled “White Whale,” was directed by Zach Braff, another Lawrence alum from Scrubs.
