A frightening rescue unfolded in Sacramento after police officers pulled a crying boy to safety from the edge of a freeway overpass, according to newly released dashcam video.
The incident happened May 6 near Northgate Boulevard and Interstate 80, the Sacramento Police Department said on X.
Police said officers were dispatched after community members reported a person leaning over the railing of the overpass. When officers arrived, they discovered a juvenile hanging dangerously from the guardrail.
Dashcam footage released by police shows the child dangling over the side of the bridge with one leg wrapped around the railing while the rest of the body hung over the freeway below.
The boy could be heard crying as officers rushed toward him and grabbed hold of him before pulling him back over the ledge to safety.
“We got you,” officers repeatedly told the child during the tense rescue.
After pulling him away from the edge, officers continued trying to calm the boy down and repeatedly asked whether he was hurt and what had happened. The child continued sobbing but did not immediately respond to their questions in the video.
The footage then shows officers escorting the boy to a patrol vehicle.
Police did not release additional details about the child’s condition or what led up to the incident.
In its statement, the department thanked the community members who called 911 after spotting the dangerous situation.
“Thank you to the community members who reported this critical situation, and to the dispatchers and officers whose quick response helped prevent a tragedy,” the department said.
