In a viral TikTok video, a dog owner from British Columbia, Canada, revealed the reason why her pup was the last one to get picked out of the entire litter, and users all over the platform are heartbroken.
The clip shared in November by @rueben_the_minidach shows the mini brindle dachshund, named Rueben, peacefully napping on the couch with his upper teeth showing. His entire upper jaw hangs out of his mouth due to overbite. “Realizing you were the last picked in the litter because of your overbite,” reads layover text in the clip. And a caption says: “But now you live the best life.”
An overbite is a misalignment of teeth that can be quite painful for dogs, and it can happen when the lower jaw is shorter than the upper one. The opposite can also happen, known as underbite, when the lower jaw is longer.
According to VCA Animal Hospitals, treatment options often include orthodontic appliances to move or extract the teeth, and crown amputation with restoration.
This is just one of the many dental diseases that can affect our pups. Issues with dogs’ teeth are not uncommon, and some can be quite a threat to their health. Some breeds are genetically more prone than others to suffer from dental problems, and learning which one your pup is more exposed to may help you identify any symptoms promptly.
Veterinarian website Pet MD says that periodontal disease is the most prevalent disease in all dogs, but some breeds are at higher risk than others. Chihuahuas, Maltese, poodles, Yorkshire terriers, Pomeranians, Lhasa Apsos, King Charles cavalier spaniels, and Shih Tzus are all prone to periodontal disease.
Small and toy breeds, such as Yorkshires, poodles, Maltese, and Pomeranians, commonly have persistent deciduous teeth. On the other hand, larger breeds like Labrador retrievers are more likely to get tooth fractures.
Collies are more exposed to overbite than other pups, while boxers, Great Danes, mastiffs, and bulldogs are at risk of developing gingival hyperplasia, which is an overgrowth or thickening of the gums.
The video quickly went viral on social media and has so far received over 433,000 views and more than 38,000 likes on the platform.
One user, Rachel Roe, commented: “Oh that baby I would [have] picked first! Frickin ADORABLE.”
Angela Dawn posted: “That’s the prettiest overbite I’ve ever seen!”
Seaside added: “Stop that’s what’s makes a dog cute and unique!”
