Heartstopper didn’t get renewed for a fourth season — but Netflix found a way to still properly conclude Nick and Charlie’s love story.
“Heartstopper will return, bigger than ever,” read the Tuesday, April 22, post via Netflix’s X account. “A Heartstopper movie, our final chapter based on Alice Oseman’s upcoming volume six, is coming!!!”
According to Netflix’s Tudum, the film will follow Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke) as the fictional couple “confront the challenges of a long-distance relationship — Nick preparing for university, and Charlie gaining independence at school. “The other characters who have been featured on the show will get their journeys wrapped up as well.
Connor, 21, and Locke, 21, will also serve as executive producers on the feature. Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman wrote the screenplay for the movie based on her upcoming Heartstopper: Volume 6 novel while director Wash Westmoreland has joined the project, which will start production this summer.
Heartstopper, which is based on Oseman’s graphic novels, focuses on high school athlete Nick (Connor) as he starts to question his sexuality after developing a friendship with fellow student Charlie (Locke). The show premiered in 2022 and ran for three seasons.
Past seasons have also featured William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Tobie Donovan, Jenny Walser, Fisayo Akinade, Olivia Colman, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Rhea Norwood and more stars who portrayed characters from the graphic novel.
Before the movie news, Connor recently said he would “definitely like to do” a potential fourth season.
“I’d definitely like to do it as long as it’s done right,” he told Vogue earlier this month. “I just want to make sure that we keep the heart in it. So, we are working on something and hopefully we’re making it happen. But we’ll see. No promises. I don’t want to do it if it’s not right.”
Oseman, meanwhile, told Deadline she was hoping for a renewal as she is currently writing the sixth and final installment of her graphic novel series.
“I would like there to be [another season]. We’ve got no kind of confirmation yet,” Oseman said in October 2024. “I would love to adapt volume six. I think one more season or one more, whatever it could be, would finish the story, conclude everyone’s character arcs, and help us to say goodbye to all of those characters. So yeah, keeping my fingers crossed.”
Heartstopper is currently streaming on Netflix.
