It isn’t in Shawn Mendes’ blood to have bad energy with ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello.

On the Monday, September 30 episode of the Jay Shetty Podcast, Mendes, 26, got candid about his relationship with Cabello, 27. “I think Camila and I have just done the best job at preserving our private little fire of love for each other. Because no matter how strong mentally you are, when there are millions of people commenting on it, it’s so hard not to be affected by it…this is real love and it’s confusing and hard. I’m just lucky. She is an amazing human being,” Mendes said.

Fans were quick to respond when Pop Crave posted the quote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday, October 2. “They don’t play about each other,” one person commented. The three-time Grammy-nominated artist replied to the post, “No, we don’t.” Mendes’ response sparked a series of tweets on the matter.

One fan was quick to point out that some people may confuse Mendes’ comments, posting, “i feel like you need to clarify what you meant with your last tweet just so the general public and Camila’s fandom don’t take your words and make them into something you might not have intended, does that make sense?”

The “Stitches” singer agreed to shed some light on his intentions for speaking on Cabello.”I guess to be honest it came from a place of being a little annoyed with all the projection over the last few months about us,” Mendes confessed. “I’m usually pretty good at just watching all the ‘noise’ go by but lately it’s been kinda bugging me feeling human i guess.”

The Canadian musician continued, explaining, “and yeah part of me knows quoting a tweet and saying that is gunna start a little spin up and i guess to be honest part of me just wanted to address it and actually have a real honest relationship with you guys about how it feels from my side. I also would love to know how it feels for you.”

The singer-songwriter admitted it isn’t easy to share this personal information with the world. “It’s pretty intimidating to come online and be honest and vulnerable considering how quickly our words can be twisted and used against us but tbh i really just care about having a real relationship with you guys where i got you and you got me and all the rest is just noise,” Mendes remarked.

Mendes and Cabello have been linked since 2019; they had an on-again, off-again relationship before officially breaking up in 2023.
