The seventh-seeded Kentucky Wildcats (22-13) survived a scare in the first round to advance to a Midwest Regional second-round matchup against the No. 2-seeded Iowa State Cyclones (28-7) in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon, with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen at stake.

Otega Oweh answered a late 3-pointer with one of his own as time expired in regulation on Friday before putting Kentucky up for good with two free throws with 1:12 left in overtime as the Wildcats staved off 10th-seeded Santa Clara 89-84. Oweh finished with 35 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, while Mouhamed Dioubate came off the bench for 17 points and eight boards, and Denzel Aberdeen scored 16 points.
Iowa State had no such issues on Friday, running past No. 15 seed Tennessee State 108-74. Killyan Toure paced the Cyclones with 25 points and 11 rebounds, with Nate Heise coming off the bench for 22 points. Milan Momcilovic added 17 points, and Tamin Lipsey posted 11 points, eight assists, and three steals in the rout. Joshua Jefferson’s status for Sunday is uncertain after he left Friday’s game with a sprained left ankle.
The Wildcats look for a second straight Sweet Sixteen appearance, while the Cyclones last got out of the first weekend of the tournament in 2024. The winner faces either Tennessee or Virginia in Chicago on Friday.
Momcilovic averages 17.1 points for Iowa State, with Jefferson putting up 16.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and Lipsey posting 12.9 points and 2.2 steals a night. Oweh scores an average of 18.7 points for Kentucky, while Aberdeen nets 13.3 points per game, and Malachi Moreno snares 6.3 boards an outing.
