A Muslim family’s cat has delighted the internet with her confused reaction at the begininning of Ramadan.
The hilarious video was shared on the cat’s dedicated TikTok account @ameera112923, showing how utterly perplexed the cat seemed when her family woke up especially early. The video explains that the whole family was up “eating breakfast at 4:56am” because it was the beginning of Ramadan.
The cat, named Ameera, looked bewildered by her family early start to the day. It was definitely too early for her, and she’d have much preferred to sleep in.
Since the clip was shared online, it has gone viral with over 15.9 million views and 2.9 million likes at the time of writing.
Newsweek has contacted @ameera112923 via TikTok for comment.
Writing in the caption alongside the video, Ameera’s owner explained that it’s only “her second Ramadan,” so she hasn’t quite got the hang of it yet.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, is a holy month of fasting. It is considered a period of introspection, communal prayer and a time to practice self-restraint, as explained by Britannica.
One of the pillars of Islam is sawm, which means to refrain. During the month of Ramadan, sawm is the obligation to refrain from food, drink, and sexual activity between dawn and dusk. It also encompasses any other behaviors that are considered immoral, including impure thoughts or bad deeds.
Fasting is required by able-bodied adults and older children during daylight hours, however pregnant or nursing women, children, the elderly, or those who are mentally ill are exempt. If a person becomes unwell or they are traveling on long journeys, they can substitute extra fasting days once Ramadan is over.
Ramadan lasts throughout March 2025, and approximate fasting times will be between 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the start of the month, but ending closer to 7 p.m. toward the end of the month.
Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan with Eid al-Fitr, meaning the feast of fast-breaking.
While Ameera’s owner has been documenting Ramadan, she has eased any concerns by explaining that the cat isn’t fasting with them. She still gets her food and treats as normal.
She has continued to share videos of the cat’s confusion throughout the fasting period, with one clip joking that Ameera thinks “it’s an injustice” that breakfast time had to be moved.
Since the TikTok video went viral, many social media users lauded Ameera’s reaction, while others were filled with questions about Ramadan.
One TikTok user wrote: “Videos of confused pets are my favorite part of Ramadan as someone who doesn’t celebrate it lol.”
Another person joked: “Why is everybody up for my zoomies time?”
“He’s not confused why you’re eating breakfast. He’s confused why he’s not eating breakfast,” added another social media user.
A different comment reads: “she’s the host actually, she’s making sure y’all are eating.”
