The sore response from two muddy golden retrievers after being “banned” from the carpet has left viewers on TikTok in stitches.

Kylie Groves, a 24-year-old veterinary student from Omaha, Nebraska, captured the duo’s reaction and shared it to the platform on March 31. In the clip, her dogs—Bailey, a 2-year-old cream golden retriever, and Scout, a year-old red golden—can be seen lurking behind the family’s couch, hesitating to move forward after Groves firmly says “no.”

The source of their shame? A full-body coating of mud from a rainy day’s play, and a strict ban from stepping on the newly installed carpet.

“The goldens rolled in mud so they aren’t allowed in the new carpet and Bailey can’t handle it,” Groves wrote in the caption to the video, which has been viewed over 241,000 times and liked more than 41,000 times.

At the center of the viral moment is Bailey, whose exaggerated expressions—and well-practiced grin—became a particular highlight for viewers.

“Bailey has learned that smiling so big always gets her what she wants,” Groves told Newsweek. “It was a rainy day and both of them came inside covered in mud and we had just gotten new carpet installed so we put up the gates.

“Both goldens could not handle us being inside the living room without them and Bailey decided to sneak over as if I couldn’t see her.”

Bailey’s wide, toothy grin appears just as she edges forward, as if to charm her way past the rules.

Groves added: “Then she showed her big pearly whites knowing I would cave and let them in.”

The dynamic between the two dogs—inseparable and mischievous—has struck a chord among viewers online, particularly among fellow golden retriever owners.

Comments on the video have poured in from dog lovers worldwide, many amused by Bailey’s antics and others relating all too well to the struggle of keeping muddy pets off fresh flooring.

“Tell him it’s bathtime that’ll wipe the smile off his face,” one viewer said.

“Goldens are so hilariously opinionated,” another added.

“You distract her with your manipulative grin and I’ll sneak around the other side,” a third viewer said.

“The other one is just waiting for Bailey to make the first move,” another added.

“Everyone’s comments are so fun to read especially the fellow golden retriever owners,” Groves said. “I love how Bailey’s smile has reached so many people and brightened their days just like she has us laughing every single day with her goofy smile and personality.”

Working as a doctor’s assistant for a veterinary orthopedic center while pursuing her veterinary technician degree, Groves is no stranger to the quirks of animal behavior. Still, she said, the double act of Scout and Bailey continues to bring daily surprises and laughter.

“Bailey and Scout are definitely double trouble,” she said.
