Former NBA point guard John Wall is the new president of basketball operations for Howard University, school officials told ESPN insider Shams Charania on Thursday.

Wall entered the league as the Washington Wizards’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. He spent the first nine seasons of his NBA career in Washington D.C., earning five consecutive All-Star selections from 2013-18.

Now, Wall returns to Washington D.C. in his executive role with Howard.

Wall is already heavily involved with the Howard program, according to Charania’s reporting.

“Wall has already taken a hands-on approach to the role at Howard, playing an active role in team meetings and evaluations of recruits and transfer targets. He has helped shape the program’s overall strategic vision with focus on roster management, name, image and likeness deals, revenue sharing, agent negotiations and player mentorship,” Charania wrote.

Wall most recently played for the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2022-23 NBA season, averaging 11.4 points and 5.2 assists per game. The 35-year-old guard officially announced his retirement from basketball in August of last year.

Wall joined Amazon Prime Video as an NBA analyst soon after his retirement decision.

At the time of his retirement, Wall teased a future in basketball leadership.

“Today, I’m stepping off of the court, but not away from the game,” Wall said in a social media post “Basketball will always be in my life, and new opportunities present themselves. I feel now is the time to walk confidently into my next chapter.”
