Schreiber Foods has issued a voluntary recall of multiple cases of Einstein Bros-branded cream cheese spread distributed to four states after discovering the product might contain undeclared nuts, posing a serious and potentially life-threatening health risk for consumers with nut allergies, according to an alert published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 28, 2026.
Why the Cream Cheese Recall Was Issued
The recall involves 144 cases of Honey Almond Cream Cheese Spread produced by Schreiber Foods.
The issue stems from a packaging mismatch, where almond‑containing cream cheese was placed into cups that were labeled as plain cream cheese—creating a risk that consumers would have no idea that the product contained almonds, which is a tree nut, and one of the FDA’s nine “major food allergens.”
According to the company, the lids on the affected cups correctly identified the product as Honey Almond, but the cups themselves were incorrectly labeled as plain cream cheese.
The FDA says that undeclared allergens are among the most common—and potentially dangerous—causes of food recalls.
States Affected by the Recall
The recalled cream cheese was distributed to Einstein Bros. Bagels locations in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming, the FDA said.
It was sold in 6‑ounce plastic cups under the Einstein Bros. Bagels brand name.
Consumers can identify the affected product by checking the lot code printed on the bottom of the cup. The affected lot code reads “Best If Used By Jul 21, 2026 LO.”
Health Risks for Consumers With Nut Allergies
The FDA warns that anyone with an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds could face a serious or life‑threatening allergic reaction if they consume the mislabeled cream cheese.
Symptoms of an allergic reaction can include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
At the time of publishing, according to the FDA notice, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported.
What Consumers Should Do Next
Schreiber Foods said that the issue was due to an error during packaging, which has since been corrected. The company’s internal review confirmed the problem was isolated to this single product and lot.
Consumers who have purchased the affected Honey Almond Cream Cheese Spread and have a tree nut allergy are urged not to consume the product. Instead, the FDA advises returning it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
