UPDATE — 8/21/25 7:51 p.m. ET: Lil Nas X has been charged and booked following his hospitalization.

Following his release from the hospital, Lil Nas X was charged with a misdemeanor and booked at 11:22 a.m, according to the booking report obtained by People.

Original story:

Lil Nas X has reportedly been hospitalized after roaming Los Angeles streets in his underwear.

A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to Us Weekly that officers responded to calls about a “nude man walking in the street” on Ventura Boulevard just before 6 a.m. on Thursday, August 21. According to police, Lil Nas X (real name Montero Lamar Hill) tried to “batter an officer, so he was booked for battery of a [peace officer].”

TMZ reported that the “Old Town Road” rapper, 26, was transferred by police to a hospital for treatment. Once released from the hospital, Lil Nas X is expected to be formally charged and booked by the LAPD.

Viral footage of the incident showed Lil Nas X placing a traffic cone over his head as he muttered about going to a party, according to TMZ.

Us Weekly has reached out to Lil Nas X’s representatives for comment.

Lil Nas X spoke openly in the past about his family’s history with addiction and his own use of marijuana while mourning fellow rappers Nipsey Hussle, XXXTentacion and Juice Wrld. (XXXTentacion and Hussle were both shot dead, in 2018 and 2019, respectively, while Juice Wrld died of a drug overdose in December 2019.)

“So much happened during my rise,” he told Variety “You know, drugs and murders. And my grandmother passing [in 2018] — she was the first person close to me who died. It was devastating. And it made me a hypochondriac: I’d wake up, heart racing. It was scary.”

In that same interview, Lil Nas X recalled how he started “smoking [weed] heavily” as a way to self-medicate during that difficult period.

“Then I started feeling more connected with the universe, and taking everything as a sign,” he remembered.

More recently, the musician has experienced significant health issues. Lil Nas X revealed in April that he’d been hospitalized because he’d “lost control of the right side of [his] face.”

The two-time Grammy Award winner shared photos where the right side of his face was immobile compared with to the left. Two days later, Lil Nas X offered a positive update on his health when he confirmed he’d regained some movement in his facial muscles.

“I’ve been chewing a lot so I can get this muscle stronger,” he said via an Instagram video. “It’s much better, it’s much better. My eye still has to play catchup. But like, I can give a genuine smile, so that’s good.”

Lil Nas X has spent the past three years prepping the release of his second studio album, Dreamboy, which is expected to include collaborations with Beyoncé, Jermaine Dupri and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Nile Rodgers. No release date has been announced yet.

His 2021 debut album, Montero, went double platinum in the U.S. and reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Montero was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, while lead single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” received nods for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Music Video at the 2022 ceremony.
