A motorist has been killed in Sydney’s west after his car was hit by a sedan that police were following.
Police have declared the crash at St Marys a “critical incident” and say they were following the Holden sedan moments before it crashed into a Toyota Corolla hatchback on the Great Western Highway, killing the hatchback driver.
A 43-year-old man allegedly fled on foot and was arrested a short time later on Chapel Street and taken to Nepean Hospital under police guard for mandatory testing.
Police say that before the crash, two officers in a marked police car saw the Holden Insignia stopped on Mamre Road at St Marys about 4am on Tuesday.
When the officers pulled up nearby, the driver accelerated away from them, towards the Great Western Highway.
Police followed the vehicle but lost sight of it before coming upon the crash scene. A police spokesperson said the officers had not initiated a pursuit.
The driver of the hatchback is yet to be identified but is believed to be in his 40s.
A critical incident team from the North Shore Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, and the investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
