A man has been shot dead outside a Sydney home in what police say was a targeted attack, as detectives investigate if the brazen killing is linked to organised crime.

A member of the public found the man, believed to be aged in his 30s, suffering several gunshot wounds in a car parked outside a Carlingford home shortly after 7am on Wednesday. He died at the scene.

The man, who is known to police, is yet to be formally identified.

North Rocks Road has been closed, and the public are advised to avoid the area.

Acting Superintendent Michael Marinello said detectives were investigating if the shooting was linked to organised crime.

“We do not believe it was a case of mistaken identity. We believe it was not a random attack,” he said.

Marinello said several people inside the home at the time of the shooting were assisting police. It is unclear if the man lived at the Carlingford property.

Police were investigating reports from neighbours that gunshots were heard about 5.30am – an hour and a half before the man was found, Marinello said. He was shot several times.

A neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said the man often worked on cars at the home.

“She’s going to be devastated,” the neighbour said of the man’s mother.

“She did everything for her children. She’s going to be a mess.”

Another neighbour said the man and his family were quiet and kept to themselves.

Anyone with information about the shooting or dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the attack is urged to contact police.

“What I can tell the public is that we’re investigating every possible avenue that we can in relation to this matter,” Marinello said.

“We do encourage anybody with information to come forward to us to assist our investigation.”
