Negotiators remained at the scene for hours before the man was shot about 12.40am.

“Medical assistance was immediately provided to the man before he was transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital,” police said.

The man remains in hospital undergoing further treatment. No officers were injured.

Inspector Laurie Shevlin said police were thankful the incident did not escalate.

“Very concerning. Any person who discharges a firearm at anybody, particularly towards police officers – his behaviour was very concerning, and his actions were very dangerous towards the public and the police involved,” he said.

Police Ethical Standards Command will investigate the shooting, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
