Some couples renovate for resale value. This one is renovated for reach.
Paulo Gabriel da Silva Barros and Katyucia Lie Hoshino, recognized as the world’s shortest married couple, are giving fans a tour of the pint-sized paradise they call home in Itapeva, Brazil, on TLC’s new series “Most Extreme Humans.”
The show also features a Filipino man whose hands grew to twenty times the average size and a fifty-year-old man with a dramatically curved spine.
Barros, 40, and Hoshino, 36, both have dwarfism and stand a combined 71.42 inches tall, which means their house had to shrink to fit their world rather than the other way around.
Door handles hang lower, light switches sit within easy flick, and counters and storage were all built down to size.
The kitchen got the biggest glow-up. Out went the towering cupboards, in came pull-out drawers and open shelves that don’t require a step ladder and a prayer. A custom shallow sink and a lowered stovetop mean the couple can cook shoulder to shoulder without anyone standing on their tiptoes.
“Now comes the coolest part of the kitchen, the sink,” Barros said on the show, clearly proud of the fixture that finally lets him do dishes without a struggle.
The little touches keep coming: lightweight plastic step stools for the occasional high shelf, a lowered laundry sink and custom office furniture built to their exact scale. Basically, if it’s in their house, it’s been cut down to size, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
For Hoshino, the house is more than convenient; it is a genuine escape.
“When we left our home, we had to adjust to the world to fit in,” she said, describing the property as her “safe haven.”
“In our house, especially in the kitchen and bathroom, it was the opposite. It was the people who had to adapt to us,” she added.
Their romance has been winning hearts for over a decade, ever since they first crossed paths online, where Hoshino famously left Barros on read and blocked him, before finally giving him a shot years later.
The two tied the knot in London in 2016 after eight years together, and Guinness World Records made it official soon after, crowning them the shortest married couple and dethroning fellow Brazilians Douglas Maistre Breger da Silva and Claudia Pereira Rocha.
