The New York Mets were shaping up to be one of the top landing spots for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. when the slugger landed in free agency next winter. However, the Toronto Blue Jays recently shut down those rumors by agreeing to a 14-year contract with the superstar.
The Mets will need to turn their attention elsewhere to find their first baseman of the future.
With Guerrero off the board, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman suggested that another reunion with Pete Alonso just became much more likely for the Mets.
“The Mets could have pursued Guerrero Jr. heavily knowing that Alonso wasn’t under contract, but with him off the board, all eyes are now on Alonso,” Rotman wrote. “Sure, the Mets could go out and sign a different corner infielder, but with Guerrero off the board, there is no better option.
“Alonso wants to be in Queens, and the Mets should want him to stick around long-term. If he has a good year (he’s already off to a good start) it would not be shocking to see a deal be reached, especially with Guerrero no longer available.”
Alonso spent a lot of time in free agency this winter, but never gained the attention that he felt like he deserved. Because of that, he ended up back with the Mets on a one-year deal with a player option for 2026.
Alonso will likely decline his $24 million player option and head back to free agency next offseason. With the Mets whiffing on Guerrero before they could even make an offer, another reunion with Alonso makes quite a bit of sense. Spotrac projects the star first baseman to sign for $174 million, but it seems like that number might be a bit too high.
