The Eugenio Suarez sweepstakes is about to heat up, and while the Yankees are considered one of the favorites to land the Arizona Diamondbacks slugger, one MLB insider says New York’s cross-town rival can’t be ruled out as a potential landing spot.
ESPN’s Jesse Rogers wondered whether the Mets could make a push for Suarez as the July 31 deadline nears. Rogers added an update to ESPN’s trade deadline rumor tracker, arguing Suarez would be an “intriguing” option for the Mets.
“They’ve gotten little production out of Mark Vientos at third base,” Rogers wrote Thursday. “And if things work out and Suarez wans to stay — and they want him to — he could also provide protection for the Mets at first base in case Pete Alonso moves on next season.”
The long-term consideration makes sense, especially given how open Alonso seemed to leaving this past offseason but a market never materialized. After a disappointing 2024 season, Alonso has bounced back and could cash in this winter, to Rogers’ point.
The more pressing issue, though, is Vientos and the production New York is getting at the hot corner. Vientos has an OPS+ of 82, and the position has been a black hole this year for an otherwise solid Mets lineup.
“The Mets rank 23rd in OPS at third, so why wouldn’t they inquire about Suarez, knowing they can hand the position back to Vientos in 2026 if they wish,” Rogers wrote.
There should be plenty of competition to land Suarez, though. He’s in the middle of a career year, having already hit 36 home runs and leading the sport with 86 RBIs and a career-best 149 OPS+. The Yankees, Mariners and Cubs are all seen as potential suitors.
