The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball behind a loaded cast of stars. But they still need to add more talent to separate themselves in the loaded National League.

Teams like the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, and Los Angeles Dodgers are up there with the Phillies. But if Philadelphia can swing a few trades, it could place itself in a position for the No. 1 seed in the NL.

Thomas Erbe of That Ball’s Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could swing a “realistic” trade with the Minnesota Twins to acquire Gold Glove outfielder Harrison Bader.

“Though he is not having a terrible season by any means, Harrison Bader has a mutual option for $10 million at the end of the 2025 season,” Erbe wrote. “It’s hard to believe the Twins would be on board picking up their side of the option. Instead of holding onto him in what is looking likely to be a lost season, a trade out of Minnesota at the deadline seems most appropriate for Bader.

“The Phillies need help in center field, and Bader can give them what they need. His defense is among the top of the list in baseball, and he can still be dangerous at the plate. Plus, he’s still a threat on the bases at age 31. If all those click after a move to Philadelphia, it can go down as one of the better moves at the deadline.”

A trade for Bader would be rather cheap. He’s not a star at this point in his career, but he’s a good baserunner and a great fielder. At worst, it would be a lateral move for the Phillies.

At best, Bader finds his stride at the plate and brings an elite glove to the City of Brotherly Love. The Phillies could take this risk in the coming weeks. They’re likely going to be aggressive in the relief pitcher market, so acquiring an affordable outfielder like Bader makes plenty of sense.
