A mom’s calm, thoughtful response after learning another parent had commented on her body has been praised online.

Molly Tranchin, who goes by @fashionveggie on social media, shared the moment that caught her off guard.

Tranchin, who splits her time between Texas and Denmark, explained that her seven‑year‑old son had come home from school and told her something he felt he needed to say.

“An older boy came up to me and told me that his mom thinks that you are fat,” Tranchin recalled in a reel on Instagram. “I was a little floored.”

The comment itself didn’t upset her, but the realization that body‑based judgments were being voiced casually in her child’s world did.

“My heart kind of tensed up—not because someone out there thinks I’m fat, obviously I could not care less—but because I genuinely forgot that there are people out there who talk about other people that way,” she said.

In that moment, Tranchin, a body‑neutral content creator and speaker, said she knew her response mattered. Rather than reacting emotionally, she focused on what she wanted her sons to internalize.

“It’s important to me that my sons know not to put too much stock in anything that others say about them—good or bad,” she told Newsweek.

She asked her son how the comment made him feel. When he said it made him feel “bad and mad” because he didn’t like someone talking about his mom, Tranchin acknowledged his instinct to protect her—then gently reframed the conversation.

She asked whether she looked sad about what was said. When both boys said no, she used the moment to explain why.

Tranchin, who shares her three sons with husband Matthew, said it was important to talk openly about the meaning of the word “fat,” rather than treating it as something shameful or taboo.

“I hope that a neutral response to being called fat, focusing instead on how our physical uniqueness—while only a small part of who we actually are—is cool and not something to be ashamed of,” she said.

Tranchin’s reel went viral on Instagram, amassing 1.5 million views. The mom of three said many viewers shared that they either grew up in homes where bodies were picked apart or are now trying to break those cycles themselves.

“The way you approached this situation gave me chills! I can only hope to be like this as a mom,” one user wrote.

“The way you intentionally choose to speak to your kids about this now will sit with them for life,” another added.

Tranchin hopes moments like this will help her sons in the future: “I want them to be good, kind citizens and wonderful partners to whomever they choose one day, so it’s important to me that they see people—and maybe even especially, women—as being so much more than what they look like.”
