Netflix is investing in a second season of Untamed after the show ended with some surprising onscreen deaths — and a possible cast exit.

“I am absolutely thrilled that we get the chance to bring another season of Untamed to life,” Bana, 56, whose character seemed to move on from Yosemite Park in the finale, said in a statement to Variety on Tuesday, July 29. “The response to season 1 has been a testament to the incredible effort by our crew to deliver something truly unique.”

He continued: “I can’t wait to take Kyle on his next journey. Massive thanks to Netflix, John Wells Productions, Warner Bros. Television and our fans.”

Untamed, which premiered earlier this month, was previously promoted as a limited series, which followed National Parks Service special agent Kyle Turner (Bana) as he worked to enforce human law in nature’s vast wilderness. In addition to Bana, the hit series also starred Sam Neill, Wilson Bethel, Lily Santiago and Rosemarie DeWitt.

Before Netflix officially renewed the show, Santiago, 29, spoke exclusively with Us Weekly about the possibility of a renewal, teasing, “I am waiting for the phone call. I’m like, ‘Find me on the horse on the mountain. I’m ready to go.’”

Santiago, who plays Naya Vasquez, admitted she wasn’t ready for the show to end.

“It’s amazing working on a limited series,” she noted. “But I think that there’s part of me that was like, ‘But I love these people and I love this character. Can we do six more [episodes] right now?’”

The actress recalled immediately knowing Untamed was special.

“When I read the script, I was like, ‘Untamed is going to be one of my favorite shows to watch.’ I didn’t think that they’d look at me twice. I was like, ‘I just can’t wait to watch it,’” she continued. “With Naya, it’s just an opportunity that I don’t get very often to play somebody this well-rounded. She gets to exist as a full human being with humor, fear, vulnerability and strength. I just absolutely adore this script and adore this character because she feels close to me.”

Bethel, 41, meanwhile, praised Untamed for how it pulled off several surprise twists including who killed Jane Doe.

“It’s a huge payoff as a viewer. It’s a huge payoff in character terms. We’ve been getting these really interesting dynamic performances from all these different actors in the show,” he shared with Us in July. “Suddenly that one little twitch that one character did in this previous episode or that one look that was shared by another character [becomes], ‘Oh, that’s what that meant.’”

He continued: “If you go back and watch it a second time, what a cool thing to be part of one of those shows that potentially rewards rewatching certain moments. You can see those things with different eyes on that second watch.”

Untamed is currently streaming on Netflix.
