Two people have been shot by NSW Police in western Sydney after they allegedly drove a car, stolen from the home of Penrith MP Karen McKeown, at officers.

One man is in a critical condition and the other is stable after the shooting on Friday afternoon on Wentworthville’s Lane Street. Both were taken to Westmead Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds, one in an ambulance with a police escort and the second without.

The police officers, who were responding to reports of the stolen car, weren’t physically injured.

The officers followed the car’s tracking device to the address. One of the men is believed to have a connection to the complex.

“When police entered an underground car park of a unit block, the stolen vehicle was allegedly driven at them,” police said in a statement.

Officers “discharged their firearms”, police said, injuring the two men inside.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb said a critical incident team, including homicide squad detectives, would be established to investigate.

NSW Ambulance said six ambulances and a helicopter arrived at 12.40pm.
