A dog owner thought she had captured a video of her puppy managing to climb onto the sofa by herself for the very first time—only to realize she got a little helping hand.

A black Labrador retriever puppy’s independent moment turned out to have a very unexpected twist as TikTok user @bellawoewella revealed in a hilarious video. The owner believed her young Labrador had finally managed to climb onto the sofa all on her own, which seemed like a monumental milestone—but, in this case, the proud moment didn’t last long.

The clip shows the puppy pulling herself onto the couch, only for the owner to look down and discover the real reason behind the puppy’s sudden leap in ability. Right in front of the couch was her senior golden retriever, Syd, lying on the floor. Instead of mastering the jump, the Labrador simply used Syd’s body as a platform to hoist herself up.

Since the video was posted on January 15, viewers are obsessed with the puppy’s clever workaround. The video has gone viral, amassing over 477,500 views and more than 146,700 likes at the time of writing.

Newsweek has contacted @bellawoewella via TikTok for comment. We could not verify the details of the video.

The owner couldn’t help but burst into laughter before apologizing to the senior dog for his unexpected role as household furniture. The video’s caption jokes that the puppy “has her own personal step stool,” while Syd remains completely unfazed—barely acknowledging he has just been turned into a canine staircase.

The combination of puppy determination, Labrador antics and Syd’s serene acceptance has made the moment a hit among dog lovers.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) says that puppies begin exploring their environments more confidently between 4 and 8 weeks old, as their senses develop and they start to interact more with their surroundings. This is also when they take their first steps toward independence, testing what they can do physically and socially.

The AKC notes that early exploration is a crucial part of development, giving puppies the confidence to navigate new obstacles—even if that sometimes means using a nearby golden retriever as a shortcut. By this stage, puppies become curious climbers, problem‑solvers and persistent learners as they figure out how to interact with their environment.

Many TikTok users have taken to the comments section to praise the puppy for thinking on her paws, while others hailed the golden retriever for being so unbothered. This has led to over 100 comments on the viral video so far.

One comment reads: “is that his step brother?”

Another TikTok user wrote: “he could literally not be any less bothered.”

A third person said: “it’s the fact that Sid is unbothered by it. Didn’t even move an inch.”

One commenter joked: “I don’t think Sid was aware he was used as a step stool.”
