Entering the 2025 NFL offseason, the Green Bay Packers were expected to have an aggressive approach. Brian Gutekunst made two sizable moves in free agency, but the team has been quiet outside of those two moves.
His two moves were signing offensive lineman Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs. However, he did not address the pass rushing situation as many expected outside of using two mid-round picks on rookie pass rushers.
Ahead of the 2025 season, there are still some options the Packers could consider pursuing.
Late in free agency, there are some players who could make a major impact in Green Bay. One, in particular, has been brought up as a potential option for the team.
Packers Key Starter Surprisingly Named ‘Most Obvious’ Trade Chip
Pro Football Network analyst Brandon Austin believes that former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney would be a good fit for the Packers.
“Adding Barryn Sorrell and Collin Oliver through the draft gives the Packers a couple of developmental options who could become impact players down the line, but it’s unclear if they’re ready to make an immediate impact,” Austin wrote. “Clowney isn’t elite, but he comes with proven production. That’s something Green Bay should consider, especially as a team with serious postseason hopes.”
Since being taken at No. 1 overall back in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans, Clowney’s career trajectory has not gone as expected. He has had some very productive years, but his consistency has not been great.
Last season, in 14 games with the Carolina Panthers, Clowney racked up 46 total tackles to go along with 5.5 sacks and four defended passes. Two years ago with the Baltimore Ravens, Clowney totaled 43 tackles, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and five defended passes.
Packers’ Matt LaFleur Fires Back About Jordan Love
Green Bay wouldn’t be signing him to be an elite pass rusher. He would record some sacks, but his physical ability and disruption would be valuable in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s system.
On a one-year deal, there would be zero risk for the Packers. If things didn’t work out, they could move on from him quickly.
It will be interesting to see if Green Bay has any more offseason moves up its sleeve. Gutekunst is always looking for ways to improve the roster. Signing Clowney could be one way to do just that.
