Federal MP Allegra Spender, whose electorate includes Bondi, has called for anti-vilification laws to be included in today’s legislation.
“When we look at Bondi, it was a crime of violent extremism, in this case, violent Islamic extremism. How do we get to the heart of stopping that?” Spender said on the ABC this morning.

“When hate preachers can call for things like the ‘final solution’ to the Jews, which is what some people have called for, and for that not to be an offence under federal law, that is a concern, because we know violence starts with hate, and that hate starts with words.”
Spender said the bills are “imperfect” but, after speaking with the prime minister last night, she “strongly expects” both to pass today.
“I do think it’s important that the parliament comes together and passes some legislation today, but honestly, there is a long road to keep the Jewish community safe, to bring our country together, and repair what we have lost.”
