Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi seemingly cautioned House Democrats to refrain from being too trigger-happy in seeking impeachment against President Trump if they roar back to power in Congress following the midterms.

She underscored that Trump’s actions will dictate whether a third impeachment is warranted and faulted the 47th president for forcing Democrats to attempt to oust him twice during his first term.

“I’ve said to people, the one person who was responsible for the impeachments of Donald Trump is Donald Trump,” Pelosi (D-Calif.) told ABC News’ “This Week” in an interview that aired Sunday.

“It’s not something you decide to do. It’s what violation of the Constitution he engages in. So that’s not somethin’ you say, ‘Oh, we’re gonna impeach him.’”

Multiple Democrats have already attempted to impeach Trump, including Reps. Shri Thanedar (D-Mich.) and Al Green (D-Texas). Democratic leadership has publicly frowned on those efforts.

Many Trump allies and Republicans have alleged that Democrats are scheming to mount a third impeachment if they retake the House in the 2026 midterm elections, which they are favored to do.

Trump has been keen on avoiding that fate. Beyond the impeachment threat, Democrats will control the House’s powerful investigatory committees if they retake the chamber and will begin heavily scrutinizing the Trump administration and the president’s family.

“Right now, the Republicans and the Congress have abolished the Congress. They just do what the president insists that they do. That will be over,” she said.

“You can have the power of subpoena to get information from these agencies of government who are not supplying any information,” Pelosi later emphasized.

The congresswoman, who announced her retirement plans last month, said that she has no doubt that House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will get the speaker’s gavel come January 2027.

Should her prediction come true, the New York congressman will hold the role she enjoyed during Trump’s first administration as his chief Democratic adversary in Congress.

Pelosi recounted her time fighting against Trump, including when she infamously tore up his State of the Union address in 2020.

“People like the tearing up of the speech,” she gleefully recalled. “I didn’t intend to go to the speech to tear it up.”

“I tore a page because it was lying. And then the next page, and then the next page,” she added. “Now, the speeches are on strong paper there. So you have to do it a few times to get it done.”
