Center Sidney Crosby suffered a lower-body injury in the first period of the contest. The issue came just weeks after he suffered a lower-body injury for Team Canada during the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics.

Crosby, 38, leads the Penguins with 64 points. He’s earned 36 assists to go along with 28 goals in 61 games played this season.

Per the Associated Press, Penguins head coach Dan Muse had bad news for Crosby and center Evgeni Malkin. They will not be available for Pittsburgh’s contest on Saturday against the Dallas Stars at PPG Paints Arena.

Malkin is dealing with an upper-body injury that has kept him out of the lineup since Sunday.

Muse considers both Crosby and Malkin as “day-to-day” with their injuries.

The injuries to Crosby and Malkin created a serious depth problem for the Penguins at center before taking on the Stars.

Per 93.7 The Fan, Muse is planning to move Rickard Rakell to center. The Penguins recalled Rutger McGroarty from the AHL to play against the Stars.

Muse hopes his players can step up without Crosby, knowing guys will have to play extra minutes against Dallas.

“It’s what happens anytime anyone comes out, guys have to step up,” Muse said. “They have to elevate. Guys have to take on different responsibilities, different minutes than they’ve had in the past.

“With Sid and with Geno, not one person is going to suddenly replace him. All of these things need to be done by committee and that’s what we’ve done all year.”

Pittsburgh enters Saturday’s contest with a 36-20-16 record. The Penguins are in third place in the Metropolitan Division standings after the New York Islanders defeated the Florida Panthers 5-2 on Saturday.
