Just over four months after abruptly ending his PGA Tour season, Billy Horschel is back in professional golf. Horschel personally confirmed that he will defend his DP World Tour BMW PGA Championship title, marking his return to action.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner surprised fans by posting on X that he would be traveling to England for the European Tour’s flagship event. Shortly after, he reposted a PGA Tour post, revealing his return to the courses and detailing his recovery.
Meanwhile, his name appeared on the entry list for the BMW PGA Championship, which will take place at the Wentworth Club in England from Sept. 11-14.
As you may recall, Horschel had to abruptly halt his season last May due to a hip injury that even led to surgery.
“After consulting with doctors and my team, I have decided to have right hip surgery early next week out in Colorado,” Horschel said back then in a video posted on X. “It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar but this is a preventative measure.”
In the same video, Horschel stated that he would be back by late summer or early fall, and he has delivered.
His presence at the BMW PGA Championship suggests he could be making some starts during the PGA Tour’s so-called FedEx Cup Fall.
Horschel only played 12 regular-season events on the American tour, making seven cuts and two top-10 finishes. His best finish was a tie for fourth at the Valspar Championship, six weeks before his hip surgery.
Horschel won the BMW PGA Championship last season in spectacular fashion. He finished the 72-hole regulation round with a score of 20-under, tied with Rory McIlroy and Thriston Lawrence, leading to a playoff that turned out to be not for the faint of heart.
Lawrence was left on the first hole of the playoff, carding bogey while his two opponents birdied the hole. One hole later, McIlroy birdied again, but Horschel responded with an eagle that included holing a putt from over 30 feet to win the title.
This was Horschel’s second title at Wentworth Club, having previously won the same event in 2021. That same year, the 38-year-old won the WGC – Dell Technologies Match Play, completing his three wins to date on the European Tour.
