Justin Rose is the latest PGA Tour viral victim after a wayward shot during the first round of the Valero Texas Open went crazy online.
On the par-4 4th, the cameras caught Rose shanking and helicoptering the club out of his hands. While the shot was noteworthy, it was what the commentator for PGA Tour Live, Robert Damron, nailed with the one-liner.
“That is a world-class shank,” Damron said after the shot.
Not sure what a world-class shank is, but Damron rolled with it and produced one of the more memorable lines.
Rose had a “just like us” moment that fans can all relate to.
Fans love it when a PGA Tour player does something like that on the course. It resonates with fans and is something Sunday golfers do far more than the pros.
Video of the shank circulated across social media, garnering hundreds of thousands of views in mere hours.
Rose was not playing terribly. He was 3-under on the day when he hit that shot. However, the awful shank led to a double-bogey on that hole.
The English golfer added a birdie at the par-4 6th, but two more bogeys at 7 and 9 saw him sign for an even par 72. Rose missed the cut at The PLAYERS in his last start, so hopefully, Round 2 will see him bounce back and make the weekend.
Rose’s season has been feast or famine this year. He has missed the cut three times in five starts and has two top-10 finishes. He was T3 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am and T8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
