Konnor Griffin impressed in his highly anticipated Pittsburgh Pirates debut on Friday.
Griffin opened with an RBI double and finished 2-3 with a run scored in a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Baseball’s top prospect at 19-years-old doesn’t take his unique success for granted.
“I know this could be taken away at any moment,” he added. “And so, just try not to take it for granted. And just enjoy what I feel like I’m called to do, and that’s play baseball.”
Griffin’s maturity has already caught people’s attention, besides his early entry into the majors. He got married to his high school sweetheart, Dendy Hogan, in January.

A Flowood, Mississippi, native, Griffin’s career took off with Jackson Preparatory School, which led to an offer from LSU. The Pirates also drafted Griffin No. 9 in the 2024 MLB Draft, and Griffin backed out of his LSU commitment to join the minor leagues in 2025.
Griffin thrived on his way up through the minors in 2025 with a .333 batting average, 21 home runs, 94 RBI, and 65 stolen bases. His name has been mentioned among baseball greats such as Alex Rodriguez and Mike Trout for his early success amid his MLB debut.
“I would say just faith,” Griffin said about what drives him, “Just not getting too far ahead of myself. Just enjoying being where I am, trying to serve others, put others before myself.”
Griffin wanted to stay in the moment on Friday, from his first hit, which drew rave reactions from the Pirates fans to getting the team’s traffic cone afterward. It’s just the beginning for Griffin.
“I tried to just be present. Didn’t really feel my feet much,” Griffin said about his first time out, “but just tried to be where my feet were and enjoy the moment.”
Griffin gets to create more moments in his first series with the Pirates on Saturday and Sunday against the Orioles.
