The Pittsburgh Steelers are in wait-and-see mode when it comes to Aaron Rodgers right now. So is the rest of the NFL for that matter.
Rodgers has been one of the most talked about players over the last few days in free agency. He has three teams reportedly interested in him, with the Steelers being one of them.
Both the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings are the other two franchises who could sign the future Hall of Fame quarterback.
If Rodgers decides to sign somewhere other than Pittsburgh, the Steelers could be in trouble. They badly need a starting quarterback.
Insider Reveals Update on Browns’ Pursuit of Russell Wilson
Justin Fields was widely expected to be brought back, but he signed with the New York Jets on a two-year, $40 million contract. Russell Wilson is still a free agent, but the relationship between the two sides may not be ideal for a reunion.
Should Pittsburgh end up missing out on Rodgers, who could they turn to? Kirk Cousins could be a potential option, as could Joe Flacco. However, there is another name to keep a close eye on.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk believes that the Steelers would turn their attention to former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston, who started for a good portion of the 2024 NFL season.
“I know they’re gonna end up with who you think I know,” Florio said. “I’m looking at him right now. Jameis Winston. If they don’t sign Rodgers, they’re gonna go with Jameis Winston. Because he can at least get the ball down the field to DK Metcalf.”
Cowboys Add Cooper Kupp Alternative and Combine Standout in Latest Mock Draft
Winston would be a very intriguing option for Pittsburgh. He has a strong arm, which would mesh well with George Pickens and DK Metcalf. There is one issue, which is the fact that he throws a lot of interceptions.
During the 2024 season with the Browns, Winston played in 12 total games, completing 61.1 percent of his pass attempts for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. They weren’t the best numbers, but they’re not shabby either.
Missing out on Rodgers would be a huge disappointment. Winston could be a “Plan B” option to salvage the situation for a year.
Of course, the Steelers would begin planning for the future at quarterback and who they want to pursue next offseason. Pittsburgh could also target a rookie quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.
