It’s looking as though the Philadelphia Phillies will likely lose starting pitcher Ranger Suárez in free agency at the end of the season. The Phillies have a lot of money tied up in their biggest stars already, and they’ll likely be looking to re-sign Kyle Schwarber in the winter.
With Andrew Painter banging on the door of a big league promotion, the loss of Suárez wouldn’t kill the Phillies. But where could the lefty sign?
MLB’s Mark Feinsand recently listed the Los Angeles Angels as a potential landing spot for Suárez. Spotrac projects the lefty to sign for $158 million over six years in free agency this winter.
“An All-Star in 2024, Suárez opened this season in spectacular fashion, going 7-3 with a 2.15 ERA in 13 first-half starts,” Feinsand wrote. “He has struggled since the break (2-3, 5.86 ERA), but Suárez has posted a 3.63 ERA in four full seasons as a starting pitcher, providing solid work over that stretch. He may not be coveted by contenders as a No. 1, but Suárez should score a nice deal as a No. 2 or 3 starter.”
The Angels might not sound like the perfect fit for a starting pitcher who’s projected to land a deal worth close to $200 million, but Los Angeles has been rather aggressive over the last year or so.
The Angels need to continue adding talent if they want to make a legitimate run at the postseason. Adding a pitcher like Suárez to a five-, six-, or seven-year deal would open their postseason window a bit wider for a longer period of time.
It’s hard to consider them the favorites in a sweepstakes like this, but they could certainly enter the running as a dark horse candidate.
