The Boston Red Sox came into the offseason needing to add to their pitching staff. They swung a trade for Sonny Gray and could look to add even more before the winter is over.

But there’s also a chance the Red Sox lose one of their veteran pitchers in free agency. Lucas Giolito sat on the open market as of Monday, and could bolt from Boston for a deal with a team desperate for pitching.

SportsGrid’s Paul Connor predicted the Red Sox would lose Giolito to the San Francisco Giants in free agency.

“Bounced back post-elbow surgery with a 3.41 ERA in 145 innings, but underlying metrics show diminished stuff and strikeouts; profiles as a back-end starter with injury history,” Connor wrote.

Giolito is a solid innings eater at this stage of his career. He was solid last year, and the Giants could certainly use him on their big league staff.

The Giants have a few solid options in the rotation, but they don’t have the depth to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers across an entire season. Adding Giolito wouldn’t be the massive move that signing a player like Ranger Suárez or Framber Valdez would be, but it would certainly push the team in the right direction.
