Paul Toboni is leaving the Boston Red Sox to take over as the top baseball operations executive for the Washington Nationals, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report the news.

Toboni, 35, was the favorite to be the general manager under Boston’s Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Instead, he will depart for the Nationals — one of two teams looking for a head of baseball operations this offseason. The Baltimore Orioles are the other.

More to come on this story from Newsweek Sports.
