The Boston Red Sox were one of the best teams in the American League last season, but they fell short of all their biggest goals. As a result, they could be ultra-aggressive in free agency and on the trade market this season.

The biggest name the Red Sox have to offer on the trade block is outfielder Jarren Duran. Duran is a member of the crowded Red Sox outfield. He might be one of their better players, but the team’s depth in the outfield makes the All-Star expendable.

Just Baseball’s Caleb Moody predicted the Red Sox would trade Duran to the Kansas City Royals in a blockbuster offseason deal.

“As a smaller market organization, it’s all but a certainty that they won’t be in the running for free agent outfield titans like Kyle Tucker and Cody Bellinger. So this means the trade market is the more likely route they take,” Moody wrote. “And why not swing for the fences and go after one of the most coveted names on the outfield trade market in Jarren Duran?

“He’s an All-Star caliber bat on his best day who’s posted above-average offensive seasons in his past three years in Boston and would immediately slot in as the everyday left field option in Kansas City.”

The Red Sox should only trade Duran for another big league-level player. If they can land one of the Royals’ pitchers, the deal would make sense.

Duran seems like a clear Red Sox trade candidate, regardless of whether it’s to the Royals or elsewhere. Boston would be smart to capitalize on his value now.
