The Boston Red Sox have been busy this offseason, but not in free agency. Craig Breslow has made multiple trades, but Alex Bregman remains unsigned.
Breslow recently noted that adding another bat is a priority for the Red Sox, and Bregman makes perfect sense for them. He was a star for the team last season and proved to be a great leader. However, under Breslow, the Red Sox have not given out long, lucrative deals to stars over the age of 30.
Bregman is one of the best free agents remaining, but what happens if the Red Sox back out of his market? The Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Chicago Cubs have all been linked to him, but Bregman could be a great addition for the New York Yankees.
The Yankees traded for Ryan McMahon last season, but he did not turn out to be the star at third base the Yankees hoped for. The Yankees need more consistent offense from the left side of their infield, and Bregman could be that. The Yankees have sat idly by while the Blue Jays and Red Sox improve. Adding Bregman could be the splash that saves their offseason.
Prediction: Yankees finally make a major signing and add Bregman on a five-year, $170 million deal
Bregman’s former allegiance to the Houston Astros amid their cheating scandal could have left a sour taste in the mouths of many Yankees fans. However, he was a great player last season and would be a huge addition for the Yankees. McMahon would likely need to get traded if the Yankees made this move.
Bregman slashed .273/.360/.462 with 18 home runs last season. There are plenty of factors at play when it comes to the Yankees signing Bregman, including his past with the Astros. However, the bottom line is that the rest of the division is getting better while the Yankees watch. Bregman would make the Yankees a much better team and would strip the Red Sox of a key player.
